MasterBUILT’s corporate office technology was aging making remote work and collaboration across multiple hotel locations cumbersome. Continued business growth was putting pressure on legacy hardware and software applications necessitating a move to the cloud.
Industry: Hotel construction, development, management and investment company
Headquarters: Calgary, Alberta
Problem: Aging corporate technology and rapid expansion
Solution: A multi-phased cloud modernization strategy
Results: A reliable, flexible, more secure, and scalable IT system
A complete evaluation of technology was undertaken by Nucleus Networks, Virtual Chief Information Officer (vCIO), Chris Duzenberry with the primary results:
A multi-phased IT modernization strategy was developed in collaboration with Nucleus’ Project Services Division. A complete move to cloud-based technologies was adopted; migrating from an on-premises server to Microsoft 365 and Azure Active Directory. The finance team replaced their legacy accounting software with QuickBooks Online Accountant (QBOA) Edition Canada. External consulting resources were retained to handle the extraction of information from the old legacy system into QBOA.
The Virtual Private Network (VPN) and local file servers were decommissioned, and SharePoint was leveraged to replace the file server and modernize file storage and collaboration. Microsoft Modern Authentication strategies were deployed to leverage Multi-factor Authentication (MFA), Microsoft Defender for Office 365 (MDO) and conditional access policies across all properties and the corporate office. Corporate office Internet was upgraded to Fibre and fully redundant firewalls were deployed to ensure uptime. Nucleus’ Managed Microsoft 365 Backup solution was implemented to backup all data stored in the cloud.
Ongoing IT consulting services between Nucleus’ vCIO and the MasterBUILT finance and operations teams are working towards formalizing and delivering guidance on further modernization for the entire hotel and corporate office functions.
The technology upgrade and improvement initiatives at MasterBUILT now supports the businesses’ ambitious plans for growth and expansion, as well as improving collaboration among employees. The result is a reliable, flexible, more secure, and scalable IT system.
